Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server provides an easy way to create Web portals with integrated document management services and search capabilities. You can establish a central point of access to all your existing key business information and applications, as well as share information across file servers, databases, public folders, Internet sites, and SharePoint Team Services-based Web sites. Technology Components Because SharePoint Portal Server is integrated with the tools Microsoft Office® and Microsoft Windows® users make use of every day (including Windows Explorer, Office applications, and Web browsers), the server provides an intuitive solution for your users collaboration and publishing needs. SharePoint Portal Server uses several key Microsoft technologies, including Windows, the Portal Framework, Office, Microsoft Internet Explorer, the Microsoft Exchange Store, and Microsoft Search Service. When used in conjunction with Office XP, SharePoint Portal Servers enterprise-wide search, document management capabilities, and easy portal customization make Office XP a powerful content development tool. The client components of SharePoint Portal Server consist of functional extensions to Office and Windows Explorer, which enable document management functions within those applications. For example, after you modify a Microsoft Word document that you checked out from a SharePoint Portal Server workspace, in Word, you can go to the File menu and click the Check In command. Alternatively, you can use Windows Explorer to view and perform document management operations on files from a SharePoint Portal Server workspace. The rich search capabilities of SharePoint Portal Server are also available from Office XP when you browse to the workspace on which you want to search Web folders. These Office and Windows Explorer client components communicate with the server components using standard Internet Protocols.System Hardware or Software Requirements

Server Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Database SharePoint Portal Server 2003 includes a version of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000). To increase performance and scalability, use SharePoint Portal Server 2003 with one of the following database servers: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition, plus the latest service pack Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition, plus the latest service pack The database server can run any of the supported operating systems for SQL Server 2000. Note Installation of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 on a domain controller requires the use of SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition, plus the latest service pack. Network Servers with SharePoint Portal Server 2003 must be members of a Microsoft Windows NT® 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows Server 2003 domain.
