If you're looking for a full set of office software applications Lotus SmartSuite 9.5 has everything you need to get to work: the 1-2-3 spreadsheet, Word Pro word processor, Freelance Graphics presentation package, Approach database and the Organizer PIM plus lots of extras and utilities like ScreenCam, FastSite and a starter version of Net-It Now to convert your documents into HTML. A slimline interface called SmartCenter brings it all together at the top of your screen in a set of virtual "drawers" that pull out to give you instant access to your addresses, calendar, reminders, Web sites, recent documents, utilities such as the dictionary and thesaurus and the main programs. You can customise the drawers or add your own to make SmartCenter the centre of the way you work.

The heart of the package is 1-2-3 and Word Pro, both powerful applications packed with features. Word Pro has some innovative features, particularly in the interface and you can customise the menu extensively, but it's one of the slower word processors we've used. 1-2-3 is a solid, useful spreadsheet with some features that are very user friendly although Excel is often easier to use. You don't always get a database with a suite and Approach is one of the simpler packages to get started with, with wizards to help with more complex options like calculated fields. When you move onto the full power of the relational database, you'll need to start programming though. Some of the extras are rather specialised or complex too, but there's usually plenty of help. All in all, SmartSuite is a powerful set of tools at a competitive price. --Mary Branscombe
